How might Agentic AI cause economic polarization?

OpenAI plans to release an AI agent in January 2025, and it feels like the movie Her is about to turn into reality. In the movie, Theodore, played by Joaquin Phoenix, works with his AI agent, Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), and ultimately falls in love with ‘her.’ If you haven’t watched it yet, now’s the time because it’s fascinating to see what might be possible soon!

But you might be asking: What is agentic AI? In our August newsletter, we covered this in detail with a demo video, but here’s a quick reminder: Agentic AI refers to an AI system that can autonomously carry out tasks and work with other AI agents to get things done. Think of it as a project manager who takes on a big project, breaks it into smaller tasks, and assigns those tasks to different team members based on their skills and expertise.

What could this mean for your workforce and organization?

Agentic AI can potentially free up your employees’ time for more creative, meaningful, and strategic work. By automating mundane and repetitive tasks, it allows them to focus on what really matters for the business and clients. For example, imagine an Agentic AI that not only analyzes initial design concepts but also evaluates them against zoning laws, structural safety standards, and environmental considerations and determines whether a project is suitable for bidding.

How might Agentic AI cause economic polarization?

What about its economic impacts?

As with any transformative technology, Agentic AI will reduce the routine tasks often performed by mid-level skilled employees. For example, just as the invention of CAD reduced the demand for traditional drafting roles, Agentic AI is likely to bring changes by automating repetitive tasks. Like drafters, your employees today face a choice: up-skill and take on new roles and responsibilities or continue with business as usual and ignore the technology. Their response could have its own economic consequences.

As human demands for routine tasks decline, companies may need fewer employees to perform these tasks. Affected employees who choose not to adapt start looking for jobs aligned with their current skill sets. However, with fewer opportunities available, some may end up in lower-skill and lower-income roles, moving from mid-range to low-range brackets. On the contrary, employees who choose to invest in new skills could transition into non-routine and higher-paying jobs that require critical thinking, creativity, or higher skill sets. These employees will transition from mid- to higher-level income brackets.

What could this lead to?

This shift could lead to challenges, such as widening the income gap driven by the polarization of the workforce into high-income, high-skill jobs and low-income, low-skill jobs. However, it also creates an opportunity to reimagine education, training, and workplace learning and development. Forward-thinking organizations that invest in their workforce can help shape a more resilient and adaptable future. Without such efforts, ultimately, this shift could shrink the mid-income layer, making it harder for the workforce to move upwards and further increasing economic inequality.

Key Takeaways

  • What is Agentic AI?

Agentic AI can autonomously perform tasks and collaborate with other AI systems, acting like a project manager. By automating repetitive tasks, Agentic AI allows employees to focus on creative, strategic, and meaningful work.

  • Economic Impacts: Agentic AI could shrink routine, mid-level jobs, requiring employees to up-skill to avoid being displaced or moving into lower-paying roles.

  • Opportunities for Growth: Organizations that prioritize education, training, and workplace development can help employees transition into higher-skill, higher-paying roles.

  • Challenges Ahead: Without investment in workforce development, the adoption of Agentic AI could widen the income gap and reduce economic mobility.
