From Content Provider to Intelligence Enabler: Rethink Your Data in the Age of AI

The question isn’t just “How do I protect my IP?” but “How do I license my data as a strategic asset?” in the age of AI…

In one of my recent keynotes, someone asked me a question that keeps coming up:

“What are the rules around AI and copyrighted content?” Or to be clear: “Who owns what AI creates?”

It’s one of those complex questions that points to something much bigger.

On May 12th, the head of the U.S. Copyright Office was fired. It may sound like a typical political decision, but for me, it felt like it’s happening… It’s a signal that we’re in the middle of redefining our legal and economic policies regarding the protection of content, data, and ownership.

We’re moving into an era where data is no longer just a byproduct, but is becoming one of the most valuable assets a company has, which can be licensed, monetized, and embedded into AI systems.

In the “Disrupt It” book, we talked about the need to reimagine business models in the age of AI. This is exactly one of those moments: a shift from being a content provider to becoming an intelligence business enabler.

It’s not just about what you produce and protect. It’s about the value your data creates for others, and whether you’re capturing any of that value.

Most AI models today rely on publicly available data, much of it copyrighted. But its transformational value lies in moving toward proprietary, user-generated, and even synthetic data. While these sources are more difficult to access, they hold greater strategic value and could be licensed and monetized for profit.

It reminds me of the early cloud and API era.

Google Maps used to be free, but later, they built a new business model, turning it into a paid API model.

That’s where we’re now with AI! Companies can and must think of their data as a service or a value generator. Which brings me to the following questions for leaders:

  • Licensing Strategy: What’s your strategy for licensing your data, like API services, not just protecting your IPs?
  • Risk Management: What happens if your data licensing terms change or expire?
  • Collaborative Model: Could your organization benefit from joining or forming new structures like Data Unions (for collective licensing) or Training Data Banks (marketplaces that curate and license datasets)?

Because in the end, the question might not be:

“What can AI do for me?”

But rather:

“Am I positioning myself as an intelligence enabler, or am I building my future on data I don’t control?”

If you’re not controlling how your data is used, someone else is, and they may already be monetizing it.

The shift is happening: From owning content to enabling intelligence.

Are you ready to make it?
